The Experience

The day started with us nearly missing the pickup—my fault for losing track of time at breakfast. The driver just grinned and waved us on, no stress at all. At Ayia Napa Harbour, the Black Pearl looked like something out of an old movie, all dark wood and ropes creaking in the sun. Kids were already running around pretending to be pirates before we even left the dock. I didn’t expect to feel that much like a kid myself, but there you go.

Our guide—he called himself Captain Jack (I’m pretty sure that’s not his real name)—had this way of making everyone laugh without trying too hard. As we pulled away from the harbor, he pointed out little coves along the Protaras coastline where fishermen still come early in the morning. The sea caves looked almost silver under the midday light, and you could smell salt and sunscreen everywhere. Somewhere near Agioi Anargyroi Church, we stopped for swimming; I hesitated at first (the water looked cold), but ended up jumping in anyway. It was clearer than I expected—like glass—and someone handed me a snorkel that probably made me look ridiculous.

Lunch was simple but good: roast chicken, potatoes, fresh bread, and tzatziki that tasted way better than what I make at home. There was coleslaw too—though I think I ate most of it before anyone noticed. People sat wherever they wanted on deck, plates balanced on knees or railings. There was this moment when everything went quiet except for seagulls overhead and some kid giggling somewhere behind me. It felt like summer should feel—just easy.

We got a glimpse of Famagusta Ghost Town off in the haze (weather held up), which our guide explained quietly—something about history that made everyone pause for a second. On the way back to Ayia Napa Harbour, sunburned and salty-haired, people were already swapping photos on their phones. I still think about how my skin smelled like sea air all afternoon after that trip.
