The experience

You're picked up anywhere on the island in a Jeep Wrangler and driven into Curaçao's backcountry: the reddish dirt of Tera Kora, where the landscape tells stories most visitors never hear. The guide navigates terrain that has no marked roads, stopping at places that don't appear on maps. This is how you reach the Cave of Doom, where the ocean enters a sea cave and creates a natural swimming pool when the water is calm. On rougher days you walk inside to watch the waves crash through. The whole point is solitude: you swim with sea turtles in their habitat with no other people around, and you explore the tide pools of Banda Abou, the west end of the island, where your guide points out hidden wildlife, sometimes an octopus.

Kueba di Indjan, one of the island's largest cave systems, gets explored on your own schedule, not on the hourly tours that run through the commercial Hato Caves. You might see bats, geckos, hermit crabs, or a friendly snake. Snorkeling gear is provided for the secluded beaches, where colorful fish and sea turtles are common sightings. A stop at the salt flats brings you face-to-face with Caribbean flamingos (a flamboyance of them, as the guide will tell you) posed against cliffs and ocean waves.
