The Experience

"You ready for this?" our captain grinned, hand already on the throttle. I barely had time to nod before the powerboat shot forward—wind whipping my hair, salt stinging my lips. The coastline of Curacao blurred by in streaks of green and gold. I kept laughing because every bump felt like we might just lift off, but somehow it was exactly what I needed after too many days stuck behind a desk. Our local guide, Liandro, pointed out Kenepa Beach as we flew past—he said it’s one of his favorites for sunsets. I believed him. The water there looked almost fake, so bright blue it hurt my eyes.

We stopped at Playa Piskado and I could smell grilled fish from the fishermen’s shacks before I even got in the water. Snorkeling with sea turtles was... honestly kind of surreal. They moved so slowly compared to how fast my heart was beating. Liandro reminded us not to touch them—just float and watch. There was this one old turtle with a chunk missing from his shell; he looked like he’d seen some things. While we swam around, the crew started prepping lunch on board—smoke drifting over the water mixed with sunscreen and sea air.

The Blue Room cave came next. Getting in meant ducking under for a second (I hesitated—I’m not great underwater) but Liandro went first and waved me through. Inside, sunlight turned everything electric blue—my hands glowed when I held them up. It was quieter than I expected in there, just our breathing echoing off rock walls and someone’s nervous laugh bouncing around. On the way back we stopped at Kokomo Beach for one last swim—by then my arms were jelly but nobody cared.

I still think about that moment inside the cave sometimes—the weird hush and that wild color you can’t explain in photos. So yeah, if you want a day trip from Willemstad that’s part rollercoaster ride, part lazy snorkeling, part “did that really just happen?”, this is it.
