The experience
We were already wobbling a little as we rolled out from that courtyard off Trg bana Josipa Jelačića: my brakes squeaked, which made our guide, Luka, grin. He started us off right in the middle of things, telling stories about Josip Jelačić (I’d never heard of him before, honestly). The city felt alive: trams rattling by, someone selling roasted corn on the corner. I noticed the buildings, so much yellow everywhere? Luka said there’s a reason for it but I kind of missed half his explanation because a local kid zipped past us ringing his bell like mad.
We cycled through Lower Town first, then up toward Upper Town where the streets got quieter and you could hear your own tires humming over the cobblestones. At Stone Gate, Luka asked us to walk our bikes. He said it’s a holy spot for locals. It smelled faintly of candle wax and something floral. People touched the wall as they passed through. I tried to do it too but probably looked awkward. There was this moment of hush that stuck with me longer than I expected.
After that we headed south, across the Sava river into New Zagreb. Suddenly everything changed: wide avenues, those big brutalist apartment blocks that look almost Soviet (Luka called it “socialist chic,” which made me laugh). We stopped at Bundek City Park for a breather under chestnut trees. The grass was still wet from last night’s rain so my jeans got damp, but honestly it felt good after pedaling awhile. There was time for coffee if you wanted (we did), and Luka knew exactly where to go for strong espresso that tasted almost chocolatey.
The last bit took us past the Museum of Contemporary Art (a wild-looking building all glass and angles), and back toward the Croatian National Theatre with its gold trim catching late sunlight. Four hours went quick. My legs were tired but not sore. I still think about that quiet at Stone Gate sometimes, you know how some places just get under your skin? Anyway, if you want to see all of Zagreb in one go without feeling rushed or herded around, this bike tour does it right, even if your brakes squeak.
