The experience
The day starts at Zadar port, where your guide meets you and walks through safety and paddling technique before you touch the water. You get a helmet, life jacket, paddle and boat, plus a rain jacket if the weather calls for it. The Zrmanja River opens with steep canyon walls on both sides and turquoise water that stays calm enough for beginners. The first section has gentle rapids and small waterfalls, but nothing that demands prior experience. After roughly an hour of paddling, you pull over at a quiet riverside spot where the water is clear enough to swim in. This is where you eat the lunch you brought and rest before the second half.
The route turns deeper into the canyon after the break, and the paddling gets more interesting. You navigate narrower passages and pass more waterfalls, with views that open up as the walls rise higher around you. The whole river section takes about five hours from start to finish, including the swim stop and the paddle-out. Once you reach the end, a short transfer takes you back to the meeting area so you can change into dry clothes before the ride back to port.
The tour runs as a private group (you choose how many people come, from one paddler to six), so the guide adjusts the pace and the stops to match your group. Entrance to Velebit Nature Park is included, as is insurance and all the gear. If you're traveling with an infant, specialized seats are available.

Top questions
What's the Zrmanja River like for someone who's never paddled before?
The Zrmanja is suitable for all physical fitness levels. The first half of the route has calm sections and light rapids designed for beginners, with a certified guide walking you through technique before you start and staying with you the whole way.
Can I bring my own food, or is lunch provided?
You bring your own picnic lunch and eat it during the swim stop at a quiet riverside spot partway through the paddle. No meals or drinks are included with the tour.
How long does the whole experience take from pickup to drop-off?
The river paddling itself takes about five hours, and that includes the safety briefing, equipment setup, the swim and lunch break, and the paddle through both sections of the canyon. Add the transfer time to and from Zadar port on top of that.
What equipment do I need to bring, or is everything provided?
The tour provides the boat, paddle, helmet, life jacket, and rain jacket if needed. You'll want to bring water shoes or sandals that can get wet, plus your picnic lunch and any personal items you want to keep dry in the barrel provided.
Is this tour private, or will I be paddling with other groups?
This is a private tour, so your group paddles together with one guide. You choose the group size when you book: options range from one paddler to six.
Where does the tour start and end?
Pickup and drop-off happen at Zadar port. Your guide meets you there, takes you by local transfer to the Zrmanja River starting point, and brings you back to port after the paddle to change into dry clothes.
