The experience

The tour starts in Zadar's historical center, situated on a peninsula where the city has been capital of Dalmatia for over a thousand years. Your guide walks you down Kalelarga, the main street said to be older than the city itself, and introduces you to the Roman Forum: the largest in Croatia, built 2,000 years ago when Zadar became a Roman colony. The regular grid of streets and squares you walk through took shape during that era, and the Forum was its center of social life.

From there you pass the Church of St. Donatus, built in the 9th century as a private chapel for the legendary bishop, and visit St. Anastasia Cathedral, the largest in Dalmatia, where you'll learn about the city's patron saint. The guide explains why Zadar was the best fort-city in the Venetian Republic and walks you through its defensive city walls, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You'll hear the story of Queen Elisabeth and the silver chest, 250 kg of precious metal, that sits inside St. Simeon's church, and discover Five Wells Square, a large water cistern built by Venetians.
