The experience
We were barely awake when the van pulled up outside our apartment in Zadar. I’d forgotten how quiet the streets are that early. Our driver waved, cheerful already, and we all piled in, still clutching coffee. The drive out of town felt like a slow exhale. Olive groves blurring past, then suddenly a stop at a little supermarket (I grabbed some salty crackers and water, if you forget snacks, you’ll regret it later). Our guide, Marko, handed out maps and joked about “Croatian time” when someone asked if we’d be back exactly at six. I liked him instantly.
At Plitvice Lakes Gate 1, Marko sorted the pre-booked tickets while we stretched our legs. No queue at all. Just walked right in. You could hear water before you saw it, this low rush somewhere below the trees. We followed Marko for a bit as he pointed out which trails were less crowded (“Trust me, everyone goes left here, go right instead”), then he let us decide if we wanted to stick with him or wander off on our own. I split off after an hour. Honestly, I needed some quiet. The wooden walkways felt springy under my shoes and there was this sharp smell of moss everywhere. At one point I just stopped and watched a dragonfly hover over the blue-green water: no idea how long I stood there.
