A watercolor painting class at Lighthouse Beach in Istria where you learn to paint marine life and Mediterranean landscapes with a classically-trained local artist. The workshop runs about three hours with all materials provided. Groups stay small at six participants, so instruction stays personal. No painting experience is needed, and you leave with your own finished piece.

The experience

You'll spend an evening at Cape Verudela's Lighthouse Beach, one of the spots in Istria known for the most beautiful sunsets. A local artist who trained classically will walk you through watercolor techniques (painting sea turtles, dolphins, and the seascape around you), while you sit facing the water and the light changes. The workshop is built around connecting you with the sounds, the sea breeze, and the richness of what's actually in front of you, not around a lesson plan. Watercolors, brushes, watercolor blocks, pencils, erasers, and water jars all come with you. You bring only yourself and an open mind.

The group caps at six people, which means the artist can watch what you're doing and adjust the pace to where you are. Children from age three are welcome alongside adults, and families often come together. You might arrive as strangers but the artist describes people leaving as friends, each carrying home a piece of art they made that evening. The whole thing takes roughly three hours, timed so the light and the sunset are part of the painting itself.
