The Experience

I’ll be honest—I almost missed the meeting point on the Riva because I got distracted by some old men arguing over cards (and espresso) right by the water. Our tuk tuk driver, Luka, just grinned when I finally found him—didn’t seem bothered at all. He waved us in like we were already late to a family lunch. The little electric tuk tuk made this soft whirring noise as we zipped off past St. Francis Church, which I’d walked by before but never really noticed until Luka pointed out the stone lions above the door. There was this salty breeze coming in from the marina that made my hair stick up a bit—kind of nice actually.

We rolled along the west coast and through Zvoncac park where kids were kicking a ball around and shouting in Croatian (I caught “bravo!” a lot). The sun kept sliding behind clouds but it was still warm enough to smell pine needles near St. Stephan park—reminded me of summer holidays when I was younger. Luka told us about Tito’s old villa (Vila Dalmatia), and I tried to pronounce “Obojena svjetlost beach”—he laughed so hard he nearly missed the turn. At Kasjuni beach we stopped for a few minutes; some locals were already swimming even though it was barely spring. Brave souls.

The best part for me was Marjan hill—there’s this spot called Vidilica where you get a wild view over Split’s red roofs and the sea just stretching out forever. We had coffee there (included), sitting on this stone wall while seagulls yelled at each other overhead. It wasn’t quiet exactly, but it felt peaceful somehow. I took about fifty photos but none of them really caught how good it felt just being up there with salt on my lips.

After that it was kind of a blur—Poljud stadium flashed by, then some fortress walls and the national theatre with its yellow paint peeling in places. We ended up back at Bacvice beach where people were playing picigin in the shallows (that game where they slap a ball around—looks easy but isn’t). Still think about that view from Marjan sometimes—you know?
