The Experience

The drive from Zagreb to Ljubljana takes 90 minutes through villages and past landmarks — you'll pass Castle Mokrice, a 15th-century fortress on a hilltop, and the nuclear power plant at Krško, which supplies a quarter of Slovenia's electricity. The route crosses the Sava River and the Croatian border before arriving in the capital. Once there, the walking tour begins at Dragon Bridge, where the guide explains the legend of Jason and the Argonauts slaying a dragon, and how the bridge evolved through its history. From there you move through the old town to Ljubljana Cathedral, a Baroque structure built in the 18th century with doors depicting Slovenian history — entry costs 2 euros if you choose to go inside.

The guide then walks you to Triple Bridge, designed by Jože Plečnik, the architect who shaped modern Ljubljana between the two world wars, and finishes at Prešeren Square, the heart of the old town where major festivals and events happen. You'll learn how the square took its name from the poet France Prešeren and his tragic love story. After the structured walking tour, you get free time to eat, explore cafés, or wander on your own before heading to Lake Bled.

The drive to Bled passes through the Julian Alps — you'll see Storžić mountain and pass through Kranj and the small town of Radovljica, famous for its chocolate festival. At Lake Bled, you ride in a traditional Pletna boat to the island, the only one in Slovenia, where you can visit the Church of Mary the Queen, ring the fortune bell, and swim if the season allows (June through September). After the island, you have an hour at Bled Castle, a medieval fortress perched on a cliff overlooking the lake and town, where you can explore the grounds, visit the winery, or try the local Bled Cream cake while taking in the view.
