The Experience

“You sure you’ve driven one of these before?” our guide asked, grinning as he handed me the helmet. I hadn’t, but I nodded anyway — nerves jangling, dust already in the air. The buggies looked tougher than I expected, parked just above the cable car station on Mount Srđ. We could see Dubrovnik’s old rooftops far below, the sea flickering blue, islands scattered like someone tossed them there by accident. The engine started up with a cough and a rumble that made my hands tingle.

Our guide — Marko, with that dry Croatian humor — led us out on his ATV, waving us to follow. The trail cut straight into pine woods, sunlight flickering through branches. There was this sharp smell of resin and something almost peppery in the air (maybe wild herbs crushed under tires?). I kept thinking I’d mess up the gears or veer off into a bush, but it was easier than it looked once we got moving. Every bump rattled my bones in a good way. My friend tried to film but just ended up laughing when we hit a pothole and her phone nearly flew out of her hand.

I didn’t expect how wide the view would get as we climbed higher — suddenly it was all sky and sea and the city looking tiny below us. Marko stopped at one spot so we could catch our breath (and maybe let our arms rest). He pointed out Lokrum Island and told us some story about Napoleon’s troops camping up here; I only caught half of it over the wind but it made me look at those ruins differently. There’s something about seeing Dubrovnik from this angle that makes you feel oddly free — or maybe just dusty and happy.
