The Experience

I didn’t expect the city to look so different from above — like someone had scattered orange rooftops down a hillside, all pressed up against that blue Adriatic. Our driver, Marko, grinned when he saw me craning my neck for photos before we’d even left the meeting point. The e-tuk tuk was open on the sides so you could actually feel the salty air and hear little bits of conversation from people walking past. Someone handed out glasses of local wine (I spilled a little on my sleeve, typical) and everyone just sort of settled in as the sun started dipping behind those islands off the coast. It wasn’t loud or dramatic; it just felt peaceful. Marko pointed out where his grandparents used to live across the bay. I still think about that quiet moment sometimes, how everyone went silent for a minute while everything turned gold.
