Most people don't realize the walls aren't just a perimeter — they're a complete circuit, which means you can walk the whole thing if you have the legs for it, or dip in and out depending on how much time you have.
The real architecture sits at specific points. Fort Bokar, considered one of the most beautiful fortifications ever built, guards the southwestern corner with a kind of functional elegance — it's not ornate, it's just perfectly designed for what it had to do. Minčeta Tower anchors the highest point. Fort Lovrijenac rises 37 metres above sea level just outside the western wall, originally a four-sided fort and now one of the most photographed spots in Dubrovnik. St. John's Fortress controls the old port entrance on the southeastern side. You'll see them as you walk, each one a different era of the same defensive story.
The views are the thing nobody quite prepares you for — not just the water, but the way the terracotta roofs of Old Town sit below you, the way the light changes as you move around the circuit. It's a casual stroll if you want it to be, or a proper walk if you've got the stamina. The office where you exchange your voucher for the actual entrance ticket is at the beginning of Široka ulica — second door on the right when you enter from Stradun — and they're open until 6pm, so you'll need to pick up your ticket before heading up.
