The Experience

The van picked us up in Dubrovnik right on time—8:15 sharp, which surprised me since I’m used to things running late. The drive out to Kojan Koral was quiet except for a few jokes from our driver about “Croatian traffic” (there wasn’t any). When we arrived, the smell of hay and something earthy hit me—reminded me of summers at my uncle’s farm, honestly. Our instructor, Marko, handed out helmets and goggles and walked us through the ATVs. I’d never driven one before, so I was a bit nervous. Marko just grinned and said, “Don’t worry, you’ll get dusty but you’ll be fine.”

We started off in the wide-open Konavle field—the light was already bright but there was still that early coolness in the air. The first time we crossed the river Ljuta I actually yelped (not proud), but it felt good to laugh at myself. Water splashed up onto my boots; it was colder than I expected. There were four different terrains on this ATV quad safari—muddy bits, rocky stretches where the tires rattled your bones a little, then smoother grass where you could let go and just ride. Passing through Čilipi village, we stopped at this old country house—stone walls, figs growing wild behind it—and a tiny church where an old woman waved at us from her window. She had that look like she’s seen a thousand tours come by but still smiled anyway.

I didn’t expect to care much about the landscape but those Konavle rocks are weirdly dramatic up close—layers and cracks everywhere. Marko pointed out some wild herbs growing between them; he crushed one in his hand for us to smell (kind of minty). On the way back they gave us snacks—some local cheese and bread with a little bottle of something strong (I probably should’ve asked what it was before trying). My hands were muddy and my hair full of dust by then but I couldn’t stop grinning.

The drive back to Dubrovnik felt slower somehow—I kept replaying that first splash into the river in my head. If you’re after something polished or fancy this isn’t it—but if you want a real day trip from Dubrovnik with some adrenaline and actual dirt under your nails… well, yeah. I still think about that view over the valley as we rode back toward town.
