What makes this different from a guided hike is the rappelling itself. You start with a 15-minute tractor ride into the rainforest, then a 10 to 15-minute hike through steep, foliage-dense terrain to reach the canyon. Once there, guides fit you with a helmet, harness and rappelling gear, walk you through the safety instructions, and you descend the first waterfall. Three waterfall rappels follow, with the tallest dropping more than 6 meters. Between descents you swim and jump into natural pools fed by the cascading water.
The three-hour activity is physically demanding. You'll be completely wet by the end (clothes, shoes, everything), so come ready to move hard through water and over rock. The hike has steep sections and steps. You need to be comfortable swimming and climbing. Guides are certified and lead in English or Spanish, and they bring fruits, water and coffee to refuel you during the experience.
