The air felt sticky-warm even after sunset, music leaking out onto the street. I was nervous at first (solo travel jitters), but people just kept pulling me into conversations — someone from Berlin, a couple from San José. At the first stop, ladies got free drinks and honestly it went straight to my head faster than I expected. Diego handed out bright green shots and grinned like he knew what was coming next.
I tried to pronounce “Tamarindo” the way our Costa Rican host did — Li laughed so hard she almost spilled her drink. Between bars we followed Mr.Shots (yes, that’s his real nickname), who managed to keep everyone hyped up with chants and these tiny mystery shots he’d pass around as we walked. The night blurred in a good way — sticky floors in one club, salty air outside another, some guy playing reggaeton on his phone while we waited for entry. Not sure if it was the games or just the mix of accents but it felt less like a tour and more like crashing a party where nobody cared if you danced badly.
By midnight my voice was half gone from shouting over music and trying to win some trivia game about Costa Rica (I lost). Didn’t expect to actually care about winning a sticker but here we are. There was this moment outside the last bar where everything slowed down — warm wind off the ocean, laughter echoing down the street, someone handing me another shot (I said no… then yes). It wasn’t polished or perfect but honestly that’s what made it stick with me.
