Learn to surf the Pacific in a morning, then drift between two quiet beaches on the way back.

A full-day surf class in Tamarindo combines a 2.5-hour hands-on lesson with an expert instructor, a local meal, and beach stops at Playa Conchal and Playa Flamingo. You start with on-land technique, then practice in the Pacific. The class is built for all skill levels, from first-timers to those refining their form. Hotel pickup and an air-conditioned vehicle are included.

The experience

The day starts with hotel pickup and a drive to Tamarindo, where you meet your surf instructor on the beach. Before paddling out, you'll spend time on land learning the fundamentals: how to position yourself on the board, when to pop up, how to read the water. This grounding matters: most people catch their first wave during the 2.5-hour session because they know what to expect. The instructor watches your form, adjusts your stance, and stays in the water with you as you practice. By the end, the feeling of riding a wave in the Pacific is real, not promised.

After the lesson, hunger and salt water make a typical local meal in Tamarindo taste better than it has any right to. Then comes the return journey, which is not a straight line home. The driver stops at Playa Conchal and Playa Flamingo, two beaches that sit between Tamarindo and most hotels in the area. You can wade in, sit in the sand, or just walk the shoreline. The pace is yours. These stops break up the drive and give your muscles time to settle after paddling.

Bring sunscreen and reapply it often. The sun off the water is relentless. The whole outing runs about eight hours from pickup to drop-off. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, or French depending on the booking, and the vehicle is air-conditioned, which matters when you're damp and tired.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish and French.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 11 years); Infant (under 5): free.

What's the on-land lesson like before you get in the water?

The instructor teaches you positioning, timing and the pop-up motion on the beach so you understand the mechanics before paddling out. This preparation is why most people ride at least one wave during their first lesson.

What happens at Playa Conchal and Playa Flamingo on the way back?

Both beaches are stops where you can swim, walk the sand or rest between the lesson and your hotel. The driver does not rush. You set the pace at each one.

Do I need experience to take the lesson?

No. The class is designed for all levels, from people who have never surfed to those working on technique. The instructor adjusts to where you are.

What should I bring or wear?

Wear a swimsuit and bring sunscreen: reapply it often because the reflection off the water intensifies the sun. The operator provides the surfboard and any gear needed for the lesson.

Is this safe if I have a back or spine condition?

The operator does not recommend this experience for travelers with spinal injuries because of the paddling and pop-up motion involved. If you have concerns about your back, contact the operator before booking.
