Snorkel the Gulf of Dulce and choose between mangroves or fishing

Snorkeling in Puerto Jiménez's Gulf of Dulce on a half-day shared activity with a live guide in English or Spanish. You'll search for whales and dolphins (seasonal), snorkel in open water, watch birds in the mangroves, and tour the boundary of Piedras Blancas National Park. At the midpoint, you choose between a mangrove tour (tide permitting) or an artisanal fishing session. Snorkeling gear, binoculars, fishing tackle, lifevest and a snack are included.

The experience

You have a half-day free and want to get on the water without arranging a boat yourself. The activity departs at 8 am from Puerto Jiménez and runs four hours, starting with a search for dolphins and whales in the Gulf of Dulce: what you see depends on the season. A live guide in English or Spanish leads the group and points out birds in the mangroves as you move through the water.

At 9 am you're in the water with snorkeling gear, mask and fins provided. The group is shared, so you'll be with other travelers, and the guide stays with you. By 10 am there's a snack break on the boat. Then comes the choice: if the tide is high enough, you can tour deeper into the mangroves and see the forest from water level. If the tide is low, you switch to artisanal fishing instead, using tackle the operator provides. Either way, you're back at the departure point by noon.

Binoculars come with you for the wildlife watching, and a lifevest is provided. The pace is built around what the Gulf of Dulce offers on the day you go: whales and dolphins show up in season, but the mangrove access and fishing option both depend on the tide. That's what makes the schedule flexible enough to work with the water itself.

What’s included

  • Snorkeling gear with mask and fins.
  • binoculars for wildlife watching.
  • fishing tackle if you choose the fishing option.
  • lifevest.
  • a snack partway through.

Is this one for you? You're joining a shared group of other travelers, so the pace and stops are set by the guide and the water conditions rather than by your preferences. The four-hour window works best if you have a half-day free and want to see the Gulf of Dulce without committing to a full day on the water.

What whales and dolphins might I see snorkeling in Puerto Jiménez?

The Gulf of Dulce is home to humpback whales, sperm whales, and bottlenose dolphins, though what you encounter depends on the season. The guide will search for them during the first hour of the activity and point them out if they surface.

Do I need snorkeling experience to join this activity?

No experience is required. The operator provides all snorkeling gear (mask, fins and lifevest), and the guide is with the group in the water. The activity is suitable for all physical fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.

What's the difference between the mangrove tour and the fishing option?

The mangrove tour takes you into the forest by water to see birds and the ecosystem up close. It only runs when the tide is high enough. Artisanal fishing uses hand lines and tackle the operator provides, and it's the alternative when the tide is low. You choose which one suits the conditions on your day.

How long is the snorkeling time in the water?

Snorkeling happens at 9 am and lasts roughly an hour before the snack break at 10 am. The total activity runs four hours from 8 am to noon, with the first hour spent searching for whales and dolphins, and the final hour on either the mangrove tour or fishing.

What's included in the price?

Snorkeling gear, binoculars, fishing tackle, lifevest and a snack are all included. You bring only yourself and a towel. The operator provides everything else.
