The Experience

From there you paddle into the calm waters of the Golfo Dulce tropical fjord, a place where the water stays still enough to see what moves beneath it. The first part of the tour is daylight paddling—you're looking for marine life and getting comfortable with the kayak before the light fades. The scenery shifts as the sun drops, and the water changes color.

Before the bioluminescence kicks in, you pull ashore for a fruit snack and beach time. Swimming is possible here, so you can get in the water while it's still warm and clear. Once it's dark enough, the real event begins: every stroke of your paddle leaves a glowing swirl of light behind it. If you swim, the water itself glows around your body.
