What’s included

Your day includes pickup in an air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water onboard, an easy guided rainforest hike to Rio Celeste’s blue waters for wildlife spotting (including sloths), time to swim at Llanos de Cortés waterfall near Liberia, plus a traditional Costa Rican lunch before heading back together.

The first thing I remember is that flash of turquoise — Rio Celeste just kind of appears through the trees like someone spilled paint down the rocks. Our guide, José, grinned when he saw my face (I guess everyone does that double-take). He pointed out where the two rivers mix to make that color. The air was thick and earthy, almost sweet from the rain earlier. My shoes squelched with every step. I didn’t even care about getting muddy — it felt right for a day like this.

We stopped every few minutes because José kept spotting things I’d never notice: a sloth curled up in a cecropia tree (honestly looked like a mossy pillow), some tiny red-eyed frogs clinging to leaves. He joked that the sloths here move faster than people think — then one blinked so slowly I nearly laughed out loud. There was this moment where all you could hear was water moving somewhere below us and birds arguing overhead. I tried to say “perezoso” like he did but probably butchered it; he just laughed and said it was close enough.

Llanos de Cortés waterfall came later — not far from Liberia, maybe half an hour? You hear it before you see it, that heavy sound behind the trees. The water’s warmer than I expected, clear enough to see little fish darting around my toes. Some local kids were jumping in from the rocks while their parents watched from towels spread out on the sand. We all swam until our fingers wrinkled. Lunch after tasted better because we’d earned it (rice, beans, chicken — simple but perfect). Still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.
