The experience

Don Luis Varela has worked this land near Rio Celeste for over 30 years, growing the crops that feed his family and his community. The class starts with the crops that matter most on a Costa Rican farm (the ones you'll recognize in the local diet), and moves into the daily work: grinding sugarcane by hand, scattering feed for the chickens and cows, learning how the farm sustains itself. You're not watching a demonstration. You do the work alongside Don Luis and his family, picking up the customs and rhythms that have shaped farming here for generations.

The milking comes at the end, and no prior skill is needed. Don Luis walks you through the whole process of extracting milk from the cows, then invites you to taste fresh milk chocolate made right there on the farm. The two-hour class fits into a morning or afternoon, and a local guide in your language stays with you throughout. Pickup from Alajuela is included. If you're staying elsewhere or don't have a car, let the operator know your location when you book.
