The experience

The tour starts with hotel pickup and a 30-minute drive to the Costa Rica–Nicaragua border, where your guide manages the crossing and all passport formalities so you don't navigate them alone. After breakfast, you head to Masaya Volcano, one of the few active volcanoes in the world where the crater is accessible. You walk freely to observe the volcanic landscape and listen to the rumble of gases escaping from below. The Masaya Craft Market comes next: a sprawling Central American market where you can browse handmade goods and experience local commerce before sitting down to a typical Nicaraguan lunch.

The afternoon centers on Granada, one of the oldest cities in the Americas. You stop at the Iglesia de La Merced, a colonial church with a tower. Climbing to the roof gives you a panoramic view of Granada's colorful streets, the Mombacho volcano and Lake Nicaragua. From there, a boat tour takes you through the Islets of Granada, an archipelago of more than 360 small islands formed when Mombacho erupted thousands of years ago. The islands are covered in tropical vegetation, and the route passes local communities, monkeys and tropical birds. The day ends with the return drive to your hotel.

Your guide speaks English or Spanish and travels with you throughout. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and bottled water is provided. Because this is a private tour, only your group participates: no other travelers join the itinerary.
