The Experience

You sort of wake up to it — the sound of the waves at Playa Sámara is louder when you’re standing right there, sand already sneaking into your sandals. We met our instructor, Diego, who grinned like he’d been surfing since birth (he probably has). He handed us rashguards and did a quick safety chat that felt more like a pep talk than a lecture. I liked that he checked if we were nervous — my youngest was clutching her board like a shield. The sun wasn’t too harsh yet but you could already smell sunscreen and salt air mixing together.

The lesson itself started on the beach with Diego showing us how to pop up — I definitely didn’t look graceful, but he laughed and said everyone’s first try is awkward. My partner tried to translate “wipeout” into Spanish and failed spectacularly; even Diego’s mom (she helps run things) cracked up from under her big hat. Once we got in the water, it all felt less intimidating. The Pacific here is warm but not bathwater-warm, if that makes sense. There was this moment when my daughter actually caught a wave — she shrieked so loud a couple of locals cheered from their towels.

Afterwards, they let us keep the boards as long as we wanted to practice. That part was honestly my favorite — no pressure, just paddling around while the clouds shifted overhead. I rinsed off in their little shower shack (cold water, but refreshing) and sat for a minute watching other families give it a go. There’s something about seeing everyone try and fail and laugh together that sticks with you longer than any perfect photo does.
