You make your own piece of pottery in a working village after watching crocodiles hunt from the boat.

A private tour from Tamarindo combines a two-hour boat safari through Palo Verde National Park with a hands-on pottery workshop in the Chorotega village of Guaitil and a traditional Costa Rican lunch. You glide the rivers spotting crocodiles, monkeys and birds, then create and paint your own ceramic piece in a local studio before eating a casado meal with the community.

Boat safari, lunch, and pottery workshop

  • Boat safari in Palo Verde
  • Enjoy traditional Casado lunch
  • Participate in pottery workshop

The experience

The boat moves slowly through Palo Verde's waterways for two hours, and the wildlife appears because you're moving through their territory, not the other way around. Crocodiles sun themselves on the banks; howler monkeys call from the canopy; herons and kingfishers work the shallows. The river narrows and opens again, and the guide points out what lives where: the animals don't perform on schedule, so what you see depends on the hour and the season, but the park holds enough variety that the boat rarely returns empty-handed.

After the river, you drive to Guaitil, a small pottery village where Chorotega artisans have worked clay for generations. You sit at a wheel or a hand-building station (the workshop meets you where you are), and make something: a bowl, a cup, a small figure. The piece stays soft. You paint it with traditional patterns if you want to, or leave it plain. It fires after you leave, and the studio ships it to you later, so you're not carrying wet clay through the rest of your trip. Between the boat and the workshop, lunch arrives: a casado, the everyday Costa Rican plate of rice, beans, plantain, salad and a protein, eaten in or near the village.

The tour runs six hours total and picks you up from your hotel in Guanacaste province, so if you're staying in Tamarindo or nearby without a rental car, the logistics are already solved. Snacks and water travel with you. The guide speaks English and Spanish.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What wildlife will I actually see on the Palo Verde boat safari?

Crocodiles, howler monkeys, and wading birds like herons and kingfishers are common sights along the river. The exact animals depend on the time of day and season, but the park's waterways hold enough species that the boat regularly returns with multiple sightings.

Do I need pottery experience to make something in Guaitil?

No. The workshop sets up for all skill levels, whether you use a wheel or hand-build. The instructor shows you how to shape the clay, and you create whatever form appeals to you: the piece fires after you leave and ships to your address later.

Is the traditional Costa Rican lunch included, and what if I have dietary restrictions?

Yes, a casado meal is included. The casado is a plate of rice, beans, plantain, salad and protein. Let the operator know about dietary needs when you book so they can arrange an alternative.

How long does the boat ride last, and is it rough water?

The boat safari runs two hours on the calm river channels of Palo Verde, not open ocean. The pace is slow to maximize wildlife spotting, and the water is generally smooth, making it suitable for ages five to seventy-five.

What's included in the tour price?

The tour includes hotel pickup from Guanacaste province, the two-hour boat safari, the pottery workshop, a traditional Costa Rican lunch, snacks, bottled water, iced tea, and beer. The finished pottery piece is shipped to you after the tour.
