The experience
Palo Verde National Park sits on the banks of the Tempisque River, one of Costa Rica's most important wetland reserves and the largest concentration point for crocodiles and aquatic birds in the country. Early departures from your hotel give you the best light and activity for bird-watching. The boat itself, a covered panga, shields you from sun or rain during the 1.5-hour ride, and binoculars help you spot egrets, herons, hawks and eagles among the roughly 200 bird species that inhabit the park's 15 different habitats.
After the boat tour, a local artisan walks you through ceramic pottery-making step by step, and you get to throw and shape a pot yourself to take home as a souvenir. Lunch follows: a typical Costa Rican meal of rice and beans, green salad, meat (chicken or pork), handmade tortillas, fresh fruit juice and coffee, all cooked in a wood oven on-site. The operator asks for advance notice of any dietary restrictions.
Private transportation from your hotel is included, along with bottled water and air conditioning in the vehicle. The tour runs 5 to 6 hours total and requires a minimum of four adults to operate. A live guide speaks English or Spanish. Bring light clothes, hiking shoes or sneakers, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars and a camera.
Is this one for you?Book this tour if you have a free afternoon and want to combine wildlife watching with a hands-on craft activity: the boat ride and pottery session fit inside one outing, and the wood-oven lunch means no separate meal to arrange. A minimum of four adults is required to run the tour, so confirm your group size when booking.
