Paddle Class III–IV rapids through pristine jungle where no dam or highway breaks the canyon

Pacuare River rafting from San José is a full-day activity on one of the world's top whitewater rivers, guided by Jonatan, who has spent 24 years on this river and plans each trip himself. You raft 24 km through protected rainforest and indigenous Cabécar territory, with hotel pickup, all equipment, lunch, and certified bilingual guides included. Maximum 18 guests per departure.

The experience

What makes Jonatan different from a company is that he actually runs the river himself and remembers your trip after you leave. He personally plans your day, and past guests have stayed at his house. The Pacuare is ranked by National Geographic among the world's best whitewater rivers. It runs through a pristine jungle canyon with no dam, no crowds and no highway views cutting through it. The river flows through the protected territory of the Cabécar people, Costa Rica's largest indigenous community, so you're paddling through land that has stayed intact.

You get picked up from your San José hotel at 6am or from Turrialba at 8am in a private 4x4, never a bus. The guides are World Rafting Federation-licensed, CPR and First Aid certified, and fully insured. You'll paddle roughly 24 km of Class III–IV rapids, which means fast water with waves and some technical moves, but first-timers are very welcome and the minimum age is 12. Everything is included: your life jacket, helmet and paddle; a buffet lunch (plus breakfast if you're picked up from San José); and a certified bilingual guide who speaks English and Spanish, with some French available. There are no hidden costs and no surprises when you arrive.

The group stays under 18 people, which keeps the river from feeling crowded and lets the guide actually know who's in the boat. You'll need to book at least a week ahead, and the minimum group size is four guests. The whole day runs about eight hours from pickup to drop-off.

What’s included

  • Private 4x4 pickup from San José or Turrialba.
  • full rafting equipment including life jacket, helmet and paddle.
  • lunch and breakfast if picked up from San José.
  • certified bilingual guide (English and Spanish).

Is this one for you?Book from San José if you're based in the capital and want pickup included. Book from Turrialba if you're already near the river and prefer an 8am start. Either way, the small group size and Jonatan's personal attention mean you're not one of dozens on the water: the river stays manageable and the guide actually knows who you are.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

How difficult is Class III–IV whitewater if I've never rafted before?

Class III–IV rapids move fast and have waves and technical sections, but first-timers are welcome and the guides manage the difficulty for your group's level. The minimum age is 12, and you need a moderate level of physical fitness. The guides will brief you on technique before you push off.

What's the Pacuare River actually like when you get there?

The Pacuare runs through a pristine jungle canyon with no dam or highway cutting through it, so you're paddling through rainforest that feels remote. The river flows through protected Cabécar indigenous territory, which means the land around you has stayed intact and the water is clean.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to get to the river?

No, your pickup is included. If you're staying in San José, the 4x4 collects you at 6am. If you're in Turrialba, pickup is at 8am. You travel in a private vehicle, not a bus.

What happens if our group is smaller than four people?

The minimum group size is four guests, so you'll need to reach that number to book. If you're traveling solo or in a pair, you can ask about joining another group departing the same day.

Who is Jonatan and why does he matter?

Jonatan is the guide who personally runs the trips. He's spent 24 years on the Pacuare River and plans each day himself rather than following a script. Past guests have stayed at his house, and the feedback is that you're treated as friends, not clients.
