The Experience

You step off the path and there's a sloth hanging three feet from your face, moving so slowly you can count the seconds between breaths. This is the KSTR Re-Wilding Center in Quepos, the only wildlife rescue sanctuary in the Manuel Antonio area, and it's not a zoo — it's a working hospital and home for animals that can't go back to the wild. Your guide walks you through the grounds explaining why each animal is here: the monkey with an injured arm, the parrot that lost its flock, the coati that grew up around humans and forgot how to forage. You're not just watching them; you're learning their actual story.

The tour is a guided walk through the sanctuary, and it moves at the pace of the animals themselves — which means sometimes you stop for ten minutes watching a sloth eat a leaf, and sometimes you're moving between enclosures. Your guide covers the biology and behavior of each species, but also the bigger picture: how the center runs wildlife bridges across roads to stop collisions, how they're reforesting sections of the rainforest, how the hospital rehabilitates animals before release.
