The Experience

Ever wondered what it feels like to hang in the middle of the rainforest, legs dangling, just listening to cicadas? That’s how my day started on the Sukia ZIP Line Tour in Manuel Antonio. We met our guide—José, I think—who kept joking about “pura vida” being a lifestyle, not just a phrase. The air was thick and green-smelling, if that makes sense. I remember my palms getting sweaty before the first line (not from nerves, just humidity… mostly). Ten zip lines sounded like a lot until you’re zipping through them one after another—suddenly it’s just you, the wind, and a blur of leaves.

I didn’t expect the bridges to wobble so much—felt like walking on spaghetti at first. There were four suspension bridges and two jungle trails; we stopped once because José spotted a blue morpho butterfly (he called it “mariposa azul,” which sounds better somehow). He pointed out some tiny frogs too but honestly I only saw moving leaves. The waterfall rappel was optional but someone in our group went for it and came up grinning like they’d just won something big. I chickened out there—next time maybe.

The tour ended right by the main road, which felt weirdly abrupt after all that wildness. But then we wandered into the butterfly garden (included with the zip line tour) and everything slowed down again. It smelled faintly sweet inside—like overripe fruit—and there were flashes of orange and blue everywhere. The crocodile lagoon was quieter than I expected; one croc barely blinked as we walked past. I still think about that sudden switch from adrenaline to calm—it kind of sticks with you after you leave.
