The experience
The lesson starts with a safety introduction to the ocean and the equipment, then moves straight into the water. You'll learn the basics: how to pop up on the board, how to paddle, and how to read the difference between white water waves and open face waves. The instructors (lifelong surfers and competitive athletes local to Costa Rica) adjust the pace and focus based on your comfort level and what you want to improve. Whether you're standing on a board for the first time or you've surfed before and want to refine your technique, the lesson is built around your goals, not a fixed script.
The 90 minutes includes breaks for hydration, rest and feedback as you need them. Ride In provides the surfboard, rash guard, sunblock and water. You bring only swimwear and a towel. The team is CPR and First Aid certified through the International Life Saving and International Surfing Association, and they've built the lesson around creating a welcoming, safe environment where the focus stays on the fun of being in the water and the rush of riding a wave.
