Hunt nocturnal wildlife on foot through secondary rainforest

A private night wildlife tour in La Fortuna's secondary rainforest where you walk forest trails for two hours spotting frogs, lizards, sloths, bats and snakes with a bilingual guide. The guide's knowledge of where animals shelter after dark is what turns a walk into sightings instead of a search.

2h

Step-by-step itinerary

Night walk in rainforest

  • Walk 1km in secondary rainforest
  • Spot frogs, bats, lizards, snakes, sloths
  • Learn about rainforest wildlife behavior
  • Take pictures of animals

The Experience

The rainforest at night is a different place. You'll walk about 1 kilometer through secondary rainforest under natural regeneration, moving slowly enough to let your eyes adjust and your guide to pause when movement catches his attention. Frogs call from the canopy and ground level; sloths hang motionless in branches; bats dart past overhead; lizards freeze on bark. The guide speaks English and Spanish, and he carries the knowledge of what time of night each species is active and which trees they favor.

Two hours is long enough to move deeper into the forest and let the rhythm of nocturnal activity settle around you, but short enough that the pace stays manageable on uneven ground. Bring a flashlight or headlamp—the guide will use one too, and the beam is how you'll spot the animals. Wear closed shoes and bring your own insect repellent; the forest is wet and the insects are real. Cold water is provided to refill as you walk.

Entrance fees and the bilingual guide are included. Public transportation options are available nearby if you're staying in La Fortuna without a rental car, though the exact pickup point depends on where you're based.

Is this one for you?The tour departs from La Fortuna, and public transportation options are available nearby if you don't have a car—ask about the exact pickup point when you book. A guide who knows the forest at night is what turns a dark walk into actual sightings, so this works best if you want animals spotted, not just hoped for.

Top questions

What animals am I likely to see on a night rainforest walk in La Fortuna?

Frogs, lizards, sloths, bats and snakes are all active in the secondary rainforest at night. The guide knows which species are most visible at different hours and where they shelter, so sightings depend on the season and the night's conditions, but the tour is built around finding them.

How difficult is walking 1 kilometer through rainforest at night?

The trail is suitable for all physical fitness levels. You'll walk slowly on uneven ground for two hours total, so the pace is deliberate rather than strenuous, but you do need to move carefully in the dark and be comfortable on forest terrain.

Do I need to bring a flashlight or does the guide provide one?

Bring your own flashlight or headlamp. The guide will have one too, and both lights together are how you'll spot animals in the dark.

What should I wear for a night rainforest tour?

Closed shoes are mandatory—the forest floor is wet and uneven. Bring your own insect repellent; raincoats or ponchos are not provided, so wear clothes you don't mind getting damp from the vegetation.

Is this tour private or will I be with other people?

This is a private night tour, so it's just you and your group with the guide.
