The experience

Your day starts at 7:30 am when the guide picks you up from your hotel. The first stop is the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges, a 2-mile trail strung with 16 bridges that range from 16 to 328 feet long and hang as high as 196 feet above the rainforest floor. You walk through humid tropical forest watching for birds, reptiles, mammals and insects among the canopy. The bridges themselves are the route: each one a vantage point into the forest that ground level never gives you.

After the bridges, you head to La Fortuna Waterfall, where a swimming pool sits at the base surrounded by rocky canyons. You get time to swim in the cool water before lunch at the operator's restaurant, La Finquita. The waterfall is the break in the day: a chance to cool off and eat before the afternoon's hike.

The third stop is a 45-minute hike through the humid tropical forest at the base of Arenal Volcano, leading to a block of petrified lava from past eruptions. The walk passes through dense forest and opens onto views of Arenal Volcano and Arenal Lake. By late afternoon, you arrive at one of three hot springs reserves (Ecotermales, Choyin, or Paradise), where you soak in the thermal pools and have dinner. The guide, hotel pickup and drop-off, bottled water, entrance fees to all four sites, lunch and dinner are all included.
