The experience
The day starts with a 4x4 pickup that takes you deep into the rainforest, where you gear up with harness, helmet and life vest before entering the primary jungle of Osa. The first hours are spent walking through forest so thick that sunlight only filters through the canopy, crossing rivers and sometimes cutting a path with a machete. This is not a marked trail. It is a wild journey through a thousand-year-old ecosystem where you might spot monkeys, sloths, snakes and frogs moving through the vines and palms overhead.
Once you reach a green stream cutting through the canyon, the terrain changes. You descend to four waterfalls with natural pools, and the only way forward is by rappelling. After each descent you swim, then continue downstream with water at your waist, chest or swimming depth until you reach a natural platform. This is where the guide sets up a picnic-style lunch: still surrounded by waterfalls and jungle, with the cave behind you.
The return journey follows the same route back to the 4x4. Once you reach camp, you can rest in hammocks while waiting for transport back to Drake Bay. The whole outing takes six hours from pickup to drop-off.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (14 to 17 years); Child (8 to 13 years). Children under 8 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. No refund if you cancel.
What is the primary forest of Osa like, and what wildlife might I see?
The primary forest is thousands of years old, with massive trees so tall they block out the sun, thick vines, and palms covering the jungle floor. Monkeys, sloths, snakes and frogs live in the canopy and on the ground. Spotting them depends on the time of day and how quietly the group moves.
How deep is the water during the canyoning section, and am I swimming the whole way?
Water depth varies as you move downstream: sometimes at your waist, sometimes at your chest, and some sections require swimming. You will be in the water for a significant portion of the activity, so comfort in water is important.
What happens if I have never rappelled before?
The guide provides all instruction and safety equipment, including harness, helmet and life vest. Rappelling down the four waterfalls is the core of the activity, and the guide will walk you through the technique before each descent.
Does the tour include lunch, and where do we eat?
Lunch is included as a picnic-style meal served on a natural platform in the middle of the canyon, surrounded by waterfalls and jungle. You eat in the landscape itself, not at a restaurant or lodge.
How fit do I need to be for this hike?
A high level of physical fitness is required. The combination of jungle trekking, water crossings, rappelling and swimming over six hours is demanding. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or those who are pregnant.
