You’ll paddle through wild Class II-III rapids on Costa Rica’s cleanest river with a local guide who knows every bend. Spot monkeys and toucans between splashes, snack on fresh fruit by the water’s edge, then relax over lunch before your ride back to Jaco. It’s equal parts thrill and quiet rainforest magic — you’ll remember both.

Jaco Sunset Cruise Playa Fantasia & Water ActivitiesJaco sunset cruise to secluded Playa Fantasia with catamaran, chef lunch, open bar and water sports. Max 25 guests, wildlife reserve, dolphins & manta rays on return.★ 4.74 (195)4h 30mUS$ 159View › The first thing I noticed was the river — this milky green ribbon twisting through rainforest, louder than I expected. Our guide, Diego, grinned as we squeezed into life jackets at the edge. He handed me a paddle and said something about “pura vida” that made everyone laugh, though honestly my Spanish is still terrible. The air smelled like wet leaves and sunscreen. We’d left Jaco just after sunrise, so my brain was still catching up when the first wave slapped us right in the face.
I didn’t expect to get so hooked on watching for wildlife between rapids — Diego would point suddenly, “Look! Mono!” And sure enough, a monkey tail flicked high in the canopy before vanishing. Once he spotted a toucan (I only saw its beak) and another time a blue kingfisher zipped past like it had somewhere way more important to be. The Savegre River rafting trip isn’t just about adrenaline; there are these quiet stretches where all you hear is water moving over rocks and some bird you can’t name calling out above you. Kind of peaceful, actually.
By the time we stopped for snacks on a riverbank — homemade empanadas and pineapple that tasted sweeter than any I’ve had — my arms were jelly but nobody seemed to care. Diego told us stories about growing up nearby and how the river changes with every season. He even tried teaching me how to say “heron” in Spanish; Li laughed when I tried to say it back (probably butchered it). After we finished paddling, lunch felt like a reward — rice, beans, chicken, nothing fancy but somehow perfect after all that effort. I still think about that view from the bus window heading back toward Jaco: rainforest dripping after rain, everyone half asleep or grinning at nothing in particular.
