The experience
The Naranjo River's upper section turns into Class IV rapids during the dry season, sometimes Class V, and the narrow gorge that cuts through it is why locals call it "El Chorro," or Jet Gorge. You paddle through tight walls of rock with water that demands constant attention and quick reactions. The guide handles safety and navigation. You operate the paddle and brace yourself through the drops. It's strenuous, but the river does not care if you've rafted before: only that you can hold on and follow instructions.
The day runs about 5.5 hours from pickup at your hotel to drop-off, with the actual paddling taking roughly 4 hours. The guide meets you in the morning, drives you to the put-in about 90 minutes away, and walks you through what to expect before you get in the boat. Lunch happens on the riverbank partway through, giving you a break to eat and let your shoulders rest. The ride back to Jaco is quieter than the paddle out.
You need to be in good physical condition (the rapids are relentless and the gorge is tight), but the operator says fitness level itself is not a barrier. Minimum age is 16. If you have a spinal injury or are pregnant, this trip is not safe. Weights matter for boat balance, so tell the operator yours when you book. A vegetarian meal is available if you ask at booking time.

What does a Class IV rapid feel like compared to easier whitewater?
Class IV rapids have large waves, powerful currents and drops that require precise paddle strokes and quick reactions. You'll get splashed hard and the boat will pitch. It's not a gentle float. The Naranjo's upper section is known for being relentless, especially in the dry season when the water is high and fast.
Do I need to have rafted before to paddle El Chorro?
No prior experience is required. The guide teaches you the paddle strokes and commands before you launch, and they steer the boat through the hardest sections. What you do need is good physical fitness and the ability to follow instructions quickly when the water gets rough.
How long is the whole day from hotel pickup to drop-off?
The full experience is about 5.5 hours, including the drive to the river, the 4-hour paddle, lunch on the bank and the drive back to your hotel in Jaco. Plan the morning or early afternoon. You'll be back by late afternoon.
What is included in the price?
Hotel pickup and drop-off in Jaco, a professional guide who speaks English or Spanish, bottled water during the paddle and lunch on the riverbank are all included. Gratuities for the guide are not included but are customary.
Why is the gorge called "El Chorro"?
El Chorro translates to "Jet Gorge" in English. The name comes from the way the Naranjo River is forced through a very narrow, tight gorge, creating powerful jet-like currents and intense whitewater that define the paddling experience.
