The experience

We kicked up dust as soon as we left the hotel: helmets on, engines rumbling, sun already warming my arms. Our guide, Carlos, gave a quick thumbs-up before leading us straight into a tangle of dry forest. I kept catching whiffs of earth and something sweet (maybe those yellow flowers everywhere?), and the sound of birds almost drowned out the ATV for a second. Didn’t expect that. The first river crossing was messier than I thought. Water splashed up past my knees and Carlos just grinned like he’d seen this a hundred times.

After maybe half an hour (time gets weird when you’re riding), we broke out onto this stretch of white sand beach. There was nobody except two fishermen way down the shore. The Pacific looked almost too blue against all that pale sand. We stopped for fruit (pineapple so juicy it dripped down my wrist), and Carlos pointed out a line of howler monkeys in the trees behind us. Their calls sounded like something from Jurassic Park, honestly. I tried to say “gracias” but probably butchered it. Carlos laughed anyway.

The trail got steeper after that, winding up toward some kind of lookout point. My arms were getting tired but then we hit this spot where you could see forever: ocean one way, mountains the other. Wind in my face, just silence except for our engines cooling off. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.
