The experience
The 35' Cabo Express is built for serious fishing and serious comfort. Twin 435 HP Caterpillar engines get you to the grounds fast, and once there you have a private toilet, shaded seating, GPS, fish finder and VHF radio. The crew (a captain and two mates, both familiar with Tamarindo's waters) handles the heavy work of setting lines and reading conditions. You're fishing for species that actually live here: yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, wahoo, blue and black marlin, sailfish, roosterfish, cubera snapper, red grouper and amberjack. No trip guarantees a catch, but the Pacific around Tamarindo holds enough variety that something usually bites.
Full fishing equipment comes with the charter, so you show up without gear. Depending on which option you book, lunch and drinks are included: soda, water, beer and snacks keep you fueled between casts. If you want air conditioning for a break between the heat and the spray, that's an extra $100 on the day. The boat runs seven hours on the full-day option or shorter on the half-day and three-quarter-day versions. Your guide speaks English or Spanish, and the crew customizes the trip around what you want to fish for and how you want to fish.
Public transportation reaches the departure point, and the charter suits all fitness levels. Bring a swimsuit and sunscreen. Everything else is either provided or handled by the crew.
