Summary

Half-day fishing along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast with local crew and chance to spot dolphins, turtles, or even whales while relaxing on board

You’ll join a friendly trilingual crew for a half-day fishing charter along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast—with all gear provided plus snacks and drinks on board. Try your luck at catching yellowfin tuna or snapper, watch for dolphins or turtles gliding by, and relax under shady cushions as you swap stories with locals. It’s more about being out there than what you catch.

We stepped onto the boat just as the sun was starting to warm up the docks in Costa Rica—my coffee still half-finished in one hand, fishing rod handed to me in the other. The crew greeted us in Spanish and English (and I think I heard some French too), and you could tell they’d done this a hundred times but still seemed genuinely happy to be out there. The smell of saltwater hit right away, mixed with sunscreen and something sweet from the fruit basket they’d set out. I tried to tie a knot like our guide showed me—he smiled and took over after my third attempt. Fair enough.

The boat glided along the Pacific coast, skipping over little waves while we watched for any sign of movement below or above—sometimes dolphins popped up near the bow, and once we saw a turtle drifting by like it had nowhere else to be. It was quieter than I expected out there, except for the occasional call from one of the crew when someone got a bite. When my line jerked suddenly, I nearly dropped my soda (caught it though). They helped me reel in what turned out to be a yellowfin tuna—not huge, but big enough that my arms felt it. There was laughter all around, especially when I almost lost my hat overboard.

We tried different fishing techniques—trolling, jigging—I’m not sure I’ll ever remember which is which but it didn’t really matter. The crew kept switching things up so everyone got a shot at something new. At one point we just sat back under the shaded area, cushions surprisingly comfy, snacking on pineapple slices while watching rays glide past under the surface. Someone pointed out what might’ve been a whale spout way off in the distance; hard to say for sure but it made us all squint into the sun for a minute anyway.

I didn’t expect how peaceful it would feel out there—just water stretching everywhere and no rush at all. We talked about dinner plans (maybe grilling our catch?) and swapped stories with our guide about other days when the fish were biting more or less than today. Even now I can remember that salty breeze and how good that cold beer tasted after reeling in a fish with shaky hands.
