The tour runs two hours and follows intermediate-level trails with rocks, mud and water obstacles. A guide leads the way and can cancel for lightning or hard rain. Children from age 3 can ride as passengers with an adult driver, and sneakers plus a change of clothes are essential since you'll finish wet and muddy.

The experience

You pick up the ATV at your hotel and ride behind your guide through paths most operators avoid: unpaved forest trails with rocks, thorn branches and livestock crossing nearby, not the paved roads other companies use. The dry forest opens onto views from the Brasilito mountains before dropping down to the beach sections at Flamingo and Pot Beach. A river snakes through the circuit several times, averaging 1.5 feet deep with a maximum of 3 feet. You'll cross it as part of the ride.

The trail is built for intermediate and experienced riders. You'll spot howler monkeys, eagles, tropical birds and iguanas along the way, though the real challenge is the terrain itself: mud, rocks and water mean there's a real possibility you'll need to dismount and walk the ATV through a difficult section. Rain doesn't stop the tour unless lightning or wind makes it unsafe. Your guide makes that call and can cancel on the spot for your safety.

Bring sneakers (they're mandatory) and wear clothes you don't mind getting damaged. Pack a second set to change into afterward, since mud and river water are part of the deal. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included. If you're staying in Papagayo or Hermosa Beach, those areas are not covered by the standard route, so confirm your location before booking.
