The Experience

I didn’t expect my shoes to crunch so loudly on the old lava rocks. The air around Arenal Volcano felt thick — not hot exactly, but heavy in that way you only notice when you’re standing at the base of something alive. Our guide, José, grinned as he pointed out a faint wisp rising from the crater. “She’s sleeping today,” he said. I wasn’t sure if I believed him or just wanted to.

We started early from La Fortuna — pickup was right on time, which honestly surprised me because I’m used to things running late here. The drive was mostly quiet except for a kid behind us who kept asking if we’d see real lava (José just winked and said, “Maybe”). Once we hit the trail, it got humid fast. Sweat mixed with sunscreen and the earthy smell of wet leaves. At one point I stopped to catch my breath and realized how loud the cicadas were — like someone left a radio on static.

The hike itself isn’t too tough unless you try to race ahead (don’t). We paused at a lookout over the old lava fields — black stone twisting through green forest. José handed out slices of pineapple so sweet it almost hurt my teeth. He told us about the 1968 eruption; I tried to imagine what it sounded like but couldn’t really picture it. There was this breeze at the top that made everyone go quiet for a second, even the kid.

On the way back down, someone slipped on a loose rock and laughed it off — no drama, just muddy pants. I still think about that view over Arenal’s slopes when I close my eyes at night. It’s not something you can pack up and take home, but maybe that’s why it sticks with you.
