The experience

The tour starts in Santa Marta at 5 a.m. and drives 1 hour 20 minutes through the Caribbean lowlands to reach Tayrona National Natural Park's entrance at Neguanje. Once you arrive, the guide walks you through a short institutional video about park care, then you continue by vehicle to Playa 7 Olas: an iconic overlook where you stop to photograph the coastline and the jungle meeting the sea. From there the road ends at Playa Neguanje, where you board a boat for a 10-minute crossing to Playa Cristal.

Playa Cristal itself is a small protected bay with water so clear the sandy bottom is visible from the shore. You have free time to swim, rest and wade. If you want to snorkel or kayak, those services are available on the beach for an extra cost. The calm conditions and shallow entry make it accessible for most swimmers, though the bay's real draw is simply the water itself: the operator's description notes it shifts through colors that make it worth the early start and the boat ride. Around 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., you board the boat back to Neguanje, then the bus for the return drive to Santa Marta, arriving between 4 and 4:30 p.m.

Park entry, all transport, and a professional guide who speaks Spanish are included. You'll need to bring cash if you want to rent snorkeling gear or a kayak on the beach. The migration tax (50,000 COP) is separate and paid at the park entrance. Infants travel free but must sit on an adult's lap during the drive and boat ride.
