The experience

Palenque sits about an hour from Cartagena, and the tour starts at the Tourist Parador with a guide from the community giving you the lay of the place. From there you move through the sites that shaped Palenque's identity: the monument to Benkos Bioho, the founding hero who organized resistance to colonial rule in the 16th century; the Simankongo House Museum, where you see how ancestors lived; and the Medicinal Patio, where traditional doctors explain the plants and practices that kept the community alive for centuries.

The middle of the day brings you into the cultural heart. You join Kombilesa Mi, a traditional music group, and play their instruments yourself. This is not watching a performance but stepping into it. You walk the streets learning what each identity mural means and why it matters to Palenque's story. You learn how Catholicism arrived and how the community's own spirituality survived it. At the Kid Pambele Monument, a small boxing class wraps up the history of the boxer who brought recognition to the community. Then comes lunch: fish in coconut stew, fried chicken, steak, stewed pork or vegetarian options, cooked the way Palenque cooks it.

After lunch, the guide takes you on a 15-minute transport tour through the streets so you can photograph the murals and hold onto the images. Bottled water travels with you the whole day. The tour runs 6.5 hours total, which leaves you back in Cartagena by late afternoon.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish and French.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (11 to 28 years); Child (3 to 10 years); Infant (under 3): free.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is Benkos Bioho and why does the tour start at his monument?

Benkos Bioho was the founding hero of Palenque, an enslaved man who arrived in Cartagena in the late 1500s and organized the first free African settlement in the Americas. The monument marks his role in building the community's resistance and negotiating its survival with colonial authorities, making it the entry point to understanding everything Palenque became.

Do I actually play music with the group, or is it a demonstration?

You play the instruments yourself with Kombilesa Mi, the community's cultural music group. It is a hands-on moment, not a performance you watch from the side.

What kind of food is served for lunch?

Lunch is a typical Palenque meal: fish in coconut stew cooked in a traditional way, plus fried chicken, steak, stewed pork, or vegetarian options. The meal is prepared fresh and served as part of the tour.

How much time do I spend walking versus traveling by vehicle?

Most of the day is spent on foot moving through the community and its sites. A vehicle is used for pickup from Cartagena and for the 15-minute mural tour at the end, but the heart of the experience is walking the streets with your guide.
