The river is remote enough that your guide explains the jungle as you float past it.

Intermediate whitewater rafting on Rio Calderas near Medellín takes 8 hours door-to-door, with pickup from your hotel or the operator's office, over 3 hours of class 3/4 whitewater, lunch and swimming on a pristine beach, and return transport to the city. No rafting experience is required, and guides speak English, Spanish or French. Children from age 14 are welcome.

The Experience

The day starts with a pickup at your hotel or the operator's office in Medellín, followed by a 4x4 ride to Rio Calderas—a 2-hour drive east into the Eastern Antioquia region. You'll get a coffee and a safety briefing before the guides lead you onto the river for over 3 hours of class 3/4 whitewater. The rapids are serious enough to keep experienced rafters engaged, but the trip is built for intermediate paddlers with no prior experience; the guides handle the technical calls and keep the group moving through the remote jungle landscape.

Halfway through the run, you'll pull ashore at a pristine beach tucked into the jungle for a traditional Colombian lunch—vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options are available. This is where you swim and rest before heading back onto the water for the final stretch. The guides fill in the history of the region and point out the fauna and flora as you float, so the day is as much about the landscape as it is about the paddling.

After the last rapid, the professional drivers take you back to Medellín in air-conditioned vans. Insurance, all certified gear, and a set of free photos emailed to you a few days later are included. The whole outing runs 8 hours from pickup to drop-off.
