The Experience

“Don’t worry, you’ll get the hang of it,” our guide Diego grinned as he handed me the helmet. I’d never driven a quad before—my hands were already sweaty just gripping the handlebars. The air outside Medellín was cooler than I expected, kind of sweet too, mixed with that earthy smell after rain. We met at Juan Valdez in Parque Lleras (they actually give you a coffee discount, which is random but nice) and piled into the van for a long drive out of the city. Two hours sounds like a lot, but honestly, it went fast—mountains everywhere, little towns flashing by, Diego telling us stories about Antioquia and pointing out trees I’d never even heard of.

The first stretch on the ATVs was slow—Diego made sure we all knew what we were doing before letting us loose. There’s something weirdly satisfying about the vibration under your boots and that low growl from a real 4x4 quad (not those wimpy ones you see at tourist traps). Once we started winding down the mountain ridge, it got wild—mist coming off the hills, birds darting around us. At one point my friend tried to wave at a farmer herding cows and almost lost control—he just laughed and waved back like he sees this every day. We stopped by Rio Buey for a swim; I swear that water was colder than any pool back home but so clear it almost looked fake.

Lunch was in this tiny town—I can’t remember the name now—but they served us bandeja paisa that could’ve fed three people. Beans, chicharrón, rice…the works. Some old men played dominoes nearby and kept glancing over at our muddy boots. After eating way too much, we rode more trails along these crazy steep ridges where you could see green valleys for miles (I still think about that view sometimes). Not everyone wanted to try the advanced 4x4 trail on the way back—I chickened out honestly—but hanging by the infinity pool with an icy beer wasn’t exactly suffering either.

I didn’t expect to feel so tired or so weirdly proud at the end. My arms were sore for two days but every time I hear someone talk about Medellín now I just picture those hills and Diego’s laugh echoing behind me somewhere up there.
