Understand Colombia's conflict and rebirth through the people rebuilding it

This tour traces Colombia's political history across Bogotá's landmarks (from the 1948 Bogotazo riots to the 2016 Peace Agreement) guided by someone who contextualizes each site. You walk from the city center to the Fragmentos counter-monument (built from melted FARC rifles), meet peacebuilders at Casa de la Paz, and in the 6-hour option, share a meal at a farm-to-table restaurant that supports conflict-affected communities. The 3-hour version covers the core sites. The 6-hour adds lunch, transport and time at the brewery and peace house.

The experience

The tour starts at a café and moves through central Bogotá on foot, stopping at sites that shaped the country's recent past. You'll walk Avenida Jiménez and 7th Avenue to see where the Bogotazo erupted in 1948, visit Santander Plaza and the San Francisco church, and stand at Jorge Eliecer Gaitán's memorial. The guide explains what each location meant and why it matters now. By the time you reach Plaza de Bolívar (where the Palacio de Justicia siege happened in 1985 and peace demonstrations took place in 2016) you'll have the context to understand why this square carries so much weight.

The Fragmentos installation is the tour's pivot point. This counter-monument was built by artist Doris Salcedo and women survivors of the armed conflict, using melted rifles from FARC ex-members. Unlike traditional monuments, it will remain on display for exactly as long as the conflict lasted: a deliberate choice about what remembrance should look like. From there, you walk to Selva Nevada, a company working with conflict-vulnerable farming communities to preserve biodiverse crops through fair trade. You'll taste ice cream made from those crops, a small moment that connects the economic side of peacebuilding to what's in front of you.

At Plaza de Bolívar, there's time for questions: a chance to ask the guide about what you've seen and what's happening now. If you've booked the 6-hour option, you'll head to Casa de la Paz, a dialogue space run by former FARC members who are now entrepreneurs, artists and leaders. You can meet people from across Colombia who were directly affected by conflict and today run businesses and craft initiatives. The tour ends with a craft beer at the on-site brewery or, if you've chosen the full day, lunch at Salvo Patria, a farm-to-table restaurant that channels its work into peacebuilding communities. Hotel pickup and drop-off come with the 6-hour tour. The 3-hour version is walking only.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What exactly is the Fragmentos monument and why does it matter?

Fragmentos is a counter-monument built from melted rifles donated by FARC ex-members, created by artist Doris Salcedo alongside women survivors of Colombia's armed conflict. It will stay on display for the same number of years the conflict lasted, making the duration of the artwork itself part of its meaning: a deliberate statement about how monuments should represent loss and memory.

Will I meet people who were affected by the conflict?

Yes, but only on the 6-hour tour. At Casa de la Paz, you'll have the chance to meet leaders, artists and entrepreneurs from across Colombia who were directly affected by the armed conflict and today run businesses, craft initiatives and community projects. The space is designed for dialogue, so you can ask questions and learn their stories directly.

What's included in each tour length?

The 3-hour tour covers the walking route through central Bogotá, the Fragmentos monument, Selva Nevada ice cream, and time at Plaza de Bolívar with your guide: no transport or meals. The 6-hour option adds hotel pickup and drop-off, a visit to Casa de la Paz with a craft beer at the brewery, and lunch at a farm-to-table restaurant that supports peacebuilding communities.

Do I need to be fit to do this tour?

The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. It involves walking through central Bogotá and between stops, but the pace is set by the group and you can spend as much time as you'd like at each location, as long as the total duration doesn't exceed the tour length you've booked. The route is wheelchair accessible, and public transportation options are nearby if you need them.

What happened at Plaza de Bolívar that makes it so significant?

Plaza de Bolívar is Colombia's main square and the site of pivotal moments in the country's recent history. The 1985 siege of the Palacio de Justicia (one of the most remembered and bloody episodes in Colombian history) took place here. The square also hosted massive demonstrations both for and against the Peace Agreement signing in 2016, making it a focal point for how Colombians have debated their country's future.
