The experience

The first thing you notice is the salt in the air: like you could taste the sea just by breathing. You set off by bike from Manga Island after the guide shares a few useful tips and the group gets to know each other. Along the Bay of Cartagena, a spot few tourists see but boat owners know well, you stop for photos while the guide shares facts about the bay and Manga Island.

Getsemaní is next: color everywhere, murals that look like they were painted yesterday (and maybe they were). The guide takes you to the neighborhood’s main spots of historical and artistic interest, with time for photos of the wall art and colorful streets. You stop here to rest and hydrate, then ride on toward Bazurto Market with San Felipe de Barajas Castle looming above the route.

Bazurto Market is where Anthony Bourdain came looking for real Cartagena food for “No Reservations,” and nothing prepares you for the noise: the shouting vendors, knives on chopping boards, frying fish. The tasting shows off the seasonings and cooking of Cecilia Restaurant and the kitchens around it. Lunch is messy and perfect: a tasting of fish, shellfish, chicken, pork, beef and vegetables, Cartagena flavors that are hard to find together outside Bazurto.

After lunch, a short walk through a humble, hard-working community near the market shows how many people in Cartagena really live. Cartagena isn’t polished around the edges but maybe that’s why it sticks with you.
