The Experience
The drive out of Bogota is a bit of a wake-up call—city noise fades, and you start noticing the air feels cooler, fresher. We met our guide near the trailhead; he handed out helmets and harnesses, cracking jokes in Spanish and English. The spot’s not crowded, even on weekends, but you’ll hear birds and sometimes a distant rooster from a farm nearby.
I’d never tried canyoning before, so I was a little nervous. Turns out, you don’t need any special skills—just a sense of adventure and shoes you don’t mind getting wet. Our instructor showed us how to use the ropes before we stepped into the stream. The water’s cold at first (especially if it’s early), but after five minutes scrambling over rocks and sliding down little waterfalls, you forget about it. There’s this earthy smell from the moss and wet stone that sticks with you.
