The Experience

“Just relax your shoulders — you’ll feel the music,” Karen said, and honestly, I tried. The studio was tucked above a bakery near Chapinero, so the air smelled faintly of sweet bread and floor polish. Germán put on a track I’d never heard before (something fast, lots of brass), and we started with the basic steps. I kept messing up my left foot but he just grinned and counted out loud until it clicked. It’s weird how quickly you forget people are watching when everyone’s laughing at their own mistakes.

I’d never taken a salsa class before this day trip in Bogotá, but they made it feel like hanging out with friends who actually know what they’re doing. We stopped for water every so often — unlimited bottles lined up by the mirror — and Karen told us about how salsa came to Colombia from Cuba and New York. She pointed out little differences in style between Cali and Bogotá dancers. At one point she tried to teach me a spin; I nearly crashed into the speaker, but she caught my arm just in time. “You’re ready for the clubs,” she joked (I wasn’t sure if she meant it).
