The Experience

"You see that fisherman? He’s not really walking on water. Just clever old tricks," Miss Li grinned as she handed us our Impression Sanjie Liu tickets at the theater entrance. She had this way of making you feel like you were already part of some local secret before we’d even found our seats. The theater wasn’t what I expected: no walls, just the Li River stretching out in front and those crazy-shaped karst hills lurking in the dusk behind it. Our guide pointed out which stories came from Zhuang folklore. I tried repeating one of the names but definitely got it wrong. Li laughed and said I’d need years to get the tones right. The air was heavy with humidity but somehow that made all the colors sharper.

I kept looking back at those hills. They almost glowed from the stage lights, like they were part of the performance too. The fishermen with their bamboo poles moved so quietly you could hear the ripple of water more than their voices. It was over before I wanted it to be. We walked out with a little river breeze on our faces and I caught myself humming one of those songs without realizing it. That view is stuck in my head now whenever I think about Yangshuo.
