The experience

Wolong National Nature Reserve, home to one of the world's largest populations of giant pandas, limits its volunteer program to twenty people daily, so you'll work in a small group with professional keepers rather than crowds. Your day starts with a 7am pickup from your Chengdu hotel, followed by a drive to the base where you'll check in and begin the work: cleaning the panda enclosures and preparing fresh bamboo. Pandas eat only about 30% of the bamboo they're given, so the keepers supply it three times a day and manage what gets wasted.

Mid-morning brings a break to walk the paved grounds and hear the stories of individual pandas at the reserve. After lunch at the base, you'll watch a documentary about panda mating, birth, growth and the process of returning pandas to the wild. The afternoon continues with more enclosure work and a different task: making the cakes that supplement the pandas' diet. By 3:30pm you'll receive your volunteer certificate, then head back to Chengdu, arriving around 5pm.

The program can shift based on the pandas' health on any given day, and the base requests that volunteers wear sneakers, avoid perfume and nail polish, and skip heavy jewelry or ornaments to keep the animals calm. If you want to photograph yourself with a panda, that's available for an additional fee paid directly to the base on the day you visit.

Is this one for you?The ten-hour commitment and hands-on work suit travelers who want to spend a full day learning panda care rather than watching from a distance, and the daily limit of twenty volunteers keeps the group small enough to work directly with the keepers.
