Panda Volunteer Experience in Chengdu: Work at Dujiangyan Base
You'll clean panda enclosures and make their food, not just watch from behind glass.
A panda volunteer experience at Dujiangyan Panda Base, 70km northwest of Chengdu, puts you to work alongside the animals instead of observing them from a distance. You clean enclosures, crack bamboo, make panda cakes and walk through the base to see about 40 pandas, including celebrities like Bao Bao who was born in Washington, DC. The day runs from pickup through lunch and a panda documentary, ending back in downtown Chengdu by late afternoon.

The experience
The Dujiangyan Panda Base sits in a wild natural setting an hour and a half from Chengdu. You arrive, put on a work suit and volunteer pass, and move straight into the enclosures: cracking bamboo, carrying out leftovers and scrubbing the spaces where the pandas live. This is not a tour with a guide pointing things out. It is the actual work the base needs done, and you do it alongside the staff.
After an hour of hands-on work, you walk through the other enclosures to see the pandas up close and hear their stories. The base holds about 40 animals, many of them well-known: Bao Bao, born in Washington, DC, lives here now. You break for lunch at the base, then watch a documentary about panda biology and conservation before moving into the afternoon activity: making panda cakes by hand and cutting bamboo leaves. You'll receive a certificate of volunteering experience before the drive back to Chengdu, arriving in the late afternoon.
The schedule is a rough outline. The pandas' behavior and needs shape the actual day. An English-speaking guide travels with you and explains what you are doing and why. Private transportation picks you up from your Chengdu hotel and brings you back, so the only thing you arrange is showing up ready to work.

Is this one for you?The day starts early with a 1.5-hour drive and involves physical work (cleaning enclosures, carrying materials, standing and walking through the base), so it suits travelers who are comfortable with an active morning and afternoon. If you prefer a slower pace or cannot manage several hours of hands-on activity, a standard panda viewing tour would be a better fit.
